Bella Coola Valley
Bella Coola | Tyler CaveNot many places in the world offer such a stunning convergence of glaciers, rainforests, and ocean quire like the Bella Coola Valley—one of the most accessible gateways to the Great Bear Rainforest. Bordered by B.C.’s largest provincial park and the Pacific Ocean, this pristine region draws visitors worldwide, especially from spring to fall. Hikers traverse wildflower-lined trails to alpine peaks, while boats tour through glacial fjords to reveal hot springs and coastal wildlife. Indigenous art and storytelling enrich the experience, inviting travellers to explore responsibly and immerse themselves in nature and culture.
Bella Coola
Bella Coola, nestled in a valley of glacier-fed rivers and rich wildlife, is a haven for nature lovers, artists, and explorers. The waterfront features fishing boats, a historic cannery, and the BC Ferries dock. The small, friendly community offers an assortment of small stores featuring essentials, Indigenous art and gifts. Local tours are highly recommended to explore the waters of the Great Bear Rainforest or learn the history of the Nuxalk nation. Myriad trails surrounding Bella Coola offer plenty of outdoor adventure, and the area is popular for wildlife tours, bear viewing, and fishing.
Firvale
Firvale sits at the confluence of Burnt Bridge Creek and the Bella Coola River, a popular location for wilderness camps, glamping, bear viewing, and offering access to glaciers and waterfalls in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore diverse ecosystems, hiking and mountain biking trails, floatplane tours, and off-roading adventures with stunning views of lakes, rivers, and mountains. The Capoose Summer Trail Loop, starting near Firvale, connects to the historic Alexander Mackenzie/Nuxalk Heritage Grease Trail, leading into Tweedsmuir Park.
Hagensborg
In 1894, 100 Norwegian settlers from Minnesota founded Hagensborg, 16 km east of Bella Coola. The fjord-lined landscape reminded them of home, inspiring the valley’s first non-native farming, lumber, and fishing industries. By 1895, the first school opened in a communal tent. Today, visitors can explore Hagensborg’s heritage at the Norwegian Heritage House, a preserved 19th-century home, or the Augsburg United Church (built in 1904), which still welcomes parishioners.
Nearby trails offer stunning views, including Lost Lake’s picnic site and the wheelchair-accessible Saloompt Forest Trail, which winds through old-growth forest along the Bella Coola River. Just outside town, Bella Coola Airport provides flights to Vancouver and charters to remote coastal destinations.
Stuie
Stuie, a small community at the confluence of the Atnarko and Talchako Rivers, offers a tranquil retreat with diverse accommodations, including luxury glamping, lodges, and cozy cabins. Just a few minutes east on Highway 20, hikers can explore the 30 km Tweedsmuir Trail Route, a backcountry route connecting to the historic Nuxalk-Carrier Grease Trail.
Known for its bear-viewing opportunities, Stuie attracts wildlife enthusiasts eager to see bears foraging in their natural habitat. In winter, the area becomes a hub for heli-skiing, offering access to over 3.25 million acres of terrain from local luxury lodges.
