Rodeos

Williams Lake Rodeo | Laureen Carruthers

Rodeo culture in BC’s Cariboo Chilcotin Coast is a dynamic blend of settler ranching traditions and Indigenous cultural influences, offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s diverse cowboy heritage. From Lillooet in the south to Quesnel in the north, the rodeo scene is a blend of competition, community, and celebration, with the best rodeos ranging from small-town gatherings to major competitions that shape the area’s cowboy culture.

BC’s rodeo season kicks off in April in Williams Lake with indoor events and continues through the summer, culminating in the BC Rodeo Association Finals in September in Quesnel. These rodeos are set against the rugged, stunning landscapes of the region, offering one-of-a-kind experiences for both participants and visitors. And the fun doesn’t stop when the rodeo ends—rodeo dances, featuring traditional western music and cowboy spirit, keep the celebration going well into the night.

The Roots of Rodeo Culture in BC

The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast’s ranching culture traces its origins back to BC’s Gold Rush Era of the 1860s, when an influx of settlers, including ranchers and cowboys, began to shape the region’s identity. The establishment of large cattle ranches during this period became the cornerstone of the local economy and culture. As ranching grew, informal rodeo competitions emerged, providing a platform for these ranchers to showcase their skills in riding, roping, and cattle handling.

For those interested in exploring this rich cowboy history, the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin in Williams Lake is a must-visit. Dedicated exhibits celebrate BC’s cowboys and cowgirls, preserving the stories as they learned to navigate the Wild West. The museum also houses the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame, with its annual Hall of Fame inauguration taking place at the Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo every April—an event that honours the region’s ranching and rodeo pioneers. If you wish to enjoy the rodeo season, make sure to book a stay in of the guest ranches in the region for a full, immersive experience.

Exploring BC’s Rodeo Scene: Events from Williams Lake to Bella Coola

Bella Coola Rodeo

Bella Coola Rodeo – Bella Coola, BC

For a modern take on cowboy culture, the Williams Lake Stampede, held every July since 1928, stands out as one of the top pro-rodeo events in BC and the second-largest rodeo in Canada. It features thrilling competitions such as bareback, saddle-bronc, and bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.

In addition to these classic events, the Stampede also showcases the wild cowgirl race—a fast-paced event where local cowgirls compete to demonstrate their speed and skill on horseback. Another crowd favourite is the mountain race, a heart-pounding race where cowboys let their horses take the lead as they speed through the Stampede grounds, navigating twists and turns, often with a few riders left behind as their horses race to the finish line.

The region also hosts high school rodeos, where young cowboys and cowgirls compete for scholarships, with many earning full rides to top-tier rodeo colleges. These events provide a platform for the next generation of rodeo stars, fostering talent and passion for the sport.

Throughout the region, BC Rodeo Association-sponsored events offer a variety of local rodeos, including those in 100 Mile House, Clinton, Ashcroft, Bella Coola, Williams Lake, Anahim Lake, Interlakes, Redstone, and Quesnel. Each rodeo showcases the unique spirit of its community and adds a special twist to the traditional rodeo format. The Quesnel rodeo, for example, is paired with the lively Billy Barker Days, where townsfolk dress in 1860s attire and join in festival activities, an experience that truly takes you back in time.

Over in the Great Bear Rainforest, in Bella Coola, the annual rodeo includes its own fun twist, with cow patty bingo drawing in both locals and visitors for some quirky entertainment. This event is a must-see for anyone looking to experience a unique blend of traditional rodeo action and local charm.

The Chilcotin communities of Anahim Lake, Nemaiah, and Redstone also host First Nations rodeo events, held in tandem with local bands and Indigenous communities but open to cowboys and cowgirls from across BC. These events highlight the unique blend of First Nations traditions and rodeo culture. Meanwhile, Clinton’s May celebration offers a full Western Heritage Week, featuring cowboy poetry readings, western musical performances, and an old-time ball, celebrating the region’s deep connection to its cowboy roots.
